The larger Healthcare cluster agreed that promoting the growth and vibrancy of activities in Life Sciences would actually help strengthen the region’s healthcare industry. For example, the research and development activities at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI), a department of Children’s, contributes a great deal to the Hospital’s ability to attract top talent and be involved in the development of cutting-edge treatments and therapies. Rather than identify the development of the Life Sciences industry in Oakland as a top priority of the Healthcare cluster, however, the Oakland Partnership convened a smaller, more informal group of business, education, and government representatives to participate in preliminary discussions about the nature of the opportunity for growing a life sciences industry in Oakland.
